Design & Style: A Constant Thread

Lifestyle icon Carolyne Roehm has been a part of American design culture for more than four decades with a storied career spanning the world of fashion, decorative arts, gardening, entertaining and publishing. A discerning eye and passion for beauty led her into the world of flowers, where her books on the subject have been hailed as the best in their field. In her thirteenth book, Design & Style: A Constant Thread, to be released in October 2018, Carolyne reminisces on her remarkable life and the constant creative thread that has remained unchanged throughout. Hear some of the most memorable and insightful stories from the book by Carolyne, a woman hailed by the late design legend Bill Blass as “the ultimate tastemaker.”

One of America’s leading tastemakers, trendsetters and lifestyle experts, Carolyne Roehm is the author of 13 books. Her newest title is A Passion for Interiors.

After graduating with a B.F.A. from Washington University, Roehm’s professional design life started in the fashion world where she worked for Oscar de La Renta for 10 years. In 1985, she launched her own fashion house. Although she was successful and received many accolades in that realm, she had a larger dream, a passion for beauty that extended beyond the sphere of clothing. Roehm was determined to broaden her horizons because she felt the world of flowers, entertaining, garden design, interiors and product design would allow her to reach a far wider audience. She strives to teach others how to capture and create beauty in their own lives—in the everyday and the out of the ordinary—and in turn share it with the people they care about.

Design is second nature to Roehm. Over her designing career, she has created clothes, accessories, books, decorative accessories for the home, interiors, home fragrance and candles, table linens and table tops, flowers, paper products, glassware and luggage. Regardless of the medium, her unerring eye and innate sense of style have turned out classic, timeless products with lasting beauty and elegance. Her late friend Bill Blass said, “she is the ultimate tastemaker.”

Over the years, Roehm has been an active member of many boards and chaired innumerable committees for such organizations and charities as the Metropolitan Opera, New York Public Library and Children’s Advocacy Center of New York. She was the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and has been named on various prestigious lists including Who’s Who, Who’s Who of American Women and the International Best Dressed List and Hall of Fame.

Roehm has been featured in publications including Veranda, Town and Country, O, House Beautiful, CT Cottages and Gardens, Fortune, Architectural Digest, Food and Wine, Country Home and New York Magazine.

Her appearances include “Oprah Winfrey Show,” “TODAY Show,” “Weekend Today,” “Isaac Mizrahi Show” and “CBS This Morning.”
